Agriculture, forestation and the future in Karamoja

Clivet supports the agroforestry project promoted by the Association Groups “Insieme si può...” in Karamoja, a semi-desert region in northeastern Uganda characterized by extreme poverty and backwardness.

Karamoja is an extremely harsh environment, where deforestation and advancing drylands risk irreversibly compromising the environment, the landscape and the lives of the Karimojong, who traditionally base their livelihoods on pastoralism.
The situation is made even more critical by outside interference that destabilizes society and intensively exploits land resources and by intertribal tensions.
Among other consequences, this leads to severe food shortages, making crucial a change that brings communities closer to agriculture, to be promoted with available and sustainable techniques and tools.
“Insieme si può...” provides training in agroforestry and supports the construction of wells and rainwater harvesting systems, which are essential for farming in this climate.

The Clivet-supported initiative promotes environmental sustainability, food security and capacity building for one of the local communities through:

  • Establishing community and school gardens to improve food security and provide agricultural training.
  • Agroforestry training and microcredit to promote self-sufficiency, particularly of women heads of family groups.
  • Drilling of a well to provide access to potable water for a village and community of more than 1,500 people.

Agroforestry activities were successfully started last spring, and just these days at Nachora village we drilled the well that will enable the local community to have access to water.
